dc.descriptionThis article examines the evolution of the fluvial imaginaries of the Mapocho River in Santiago, Chile, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It analyses how the Mapocho River has evolved from a mere watercourse into a cultural border and a heterotopia, influenced by discourses of power and resistance concerning the river. Through an exploration of official and marginal perspectives in works such as La Transformación de Santiago by Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna and the novel El Río by Alfredo Gómez Morel, this study reveals how the Mapocho River has been a space that challenges established norms and values while providing refuge and defiance for those excluded by society. Using the conceptual frameworks of Gloria Anzaldúa and Michel Foucault, it examines the notions of frontier and heterotopia, as also how the Mapocho River acts as a liminal space between norm and anomaly. The Mapocho is not merely a geographical element but a living testament to the city and its inhabitants' evolution over the years, reflecting the social, cultural, and urban changes that have shaped Santiago's identity.en-US

Se analiza cómo el río Mapocho ha evolucionado de un simple cauce de agua a una frontera cultural y una heterotopía, influenciada por los discursos de poder y resistencia en torno al río. A través de una exploración de las perspectivas oficiales y marginales en obras como La Transformación de Santiago de Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna y la novela El Río de Alfredo Gómez Morel, este estudio revela cómo el río Mapocho ha sido un espacio que desafía las normas y valores establecidos, mientras proporciona refugio y desafío a aquellos excluidos por la sociedad. A través de los marcos conceptuales de Gloria Anzaldúa y Michel Foucault, se analiza la noción de frontera y heterotopía, y cómo el río Mapocho actúa en tanto espacio liminal entre la norma y la anomalía. El Mapocho no es solo un elemento geográfico, sino un testimonio vivo de la evolución de la ciudad y sus habitantes a lo largo de los años, reflejando los cambios sociales, culturales y urbanos que han dado forma a la identidad de Santiago.es-ES
