| dc.description | This paper proposes a corpus-linguistic approach to Jesuit missionary Luys de Valdivia’s 1606 Sermón en Lengua de Chile [Sermon in the Language of Chile]. It enquires into the importance, potential and limitations this text presents in shaping our understanding of sixteenth-century Mapudungun. It also surveys the historical and linguistic context of the Sermones and their author, highlighting the overlap between the processes of language documentation and evangelisation. Throughout, we spotlight a new resource for mining early textual witnesses for the Mapuche tongue: the Corpus of Historical Mapudungun. We examine a number of structural features of the corpus and its construction, going on to exemplify their use in a series of lexical, morphological and phonological case studies related to Valdivia’s work. We conclude by calling on the academic and non-academic communities to use the freely-available corpus materials and tools in order to promote a better understanding of the language, whilst at the same time enjoying and propagating it. | dc.description | Este trabajo explora el Sermón en Lengua de Chile del misionero jesuita Luys de Valdivia (1621) desde la perspectiva de la lingüística de corpus, planteando preguntas acerca de su importancia, potencialidades y limitaciones para el estudio del mapudungun del Siglo XVII. Revisamos el contexto histórico y lingüístico de los Sermones y su autor, destacando la superposición de su labor documental y evangelizadora. A través de estas indagaciones, damos a conocer un nuevo recurso para interrogar los testimonios textuales tempranos escritos en lengua mapuche: el Corpus Histórico del Mapudungun. Revisamos algunos de las características estructurales del Corpus y su construcción, procediendo finalmente a ejemplificar su uso a través de una serie de breves estudios de caso sobre el léxico, morfosintaxis y fonología de la obra de Valdivia. Concluimos con una exhortación a la comunidad académica y no-académica a usar los materiales y herramientas de este corpus de libre acceso, para comprender mejor la historia y estructura de la lengua, pero también para disfrutarla y propagarla.
