Romantics, enlightened, and the classical anthropological theory of culture

Romantics, enlightened, and the classical anthropological theory of culture; Románticos, ilustrados y la teoría antropológica clásica de la cultura
This article examines the theoretical genealogy of the anthropological concept of culture by identifying two major epistemological patterns that have shaped its historical development: the Enlightenment tradition and the Romantic tradition. Through a historical and conceptual reconstruction, the study argues that these currents represent not only divergent philosophical positions but also theoretical frameworks that continue to organize the main debates within contemporary anthropology. The Enlightenment perspective, rooted in modern rationalism, conceives culture as a universal phenomenon that can be explained through general laws, comparative models, and systematic approaches. This orientation is expressed in evolutionary, functionalist, structuralist, and cultural materialist approaches. In contrast, the Romantic tradition emphasizes the historical, particular and symbolic dimensions of cultural phenomena, influencing historical particularism, psychological anthropology, and interpretive approaches. The article argues that this tension between universalism and particularism, explanation and understanding, structure and meaning, remains a constitutive feature of the discipline. Finally, it suggests that anthropology faces the challenge of overcoming this duality by developing a theory of culture capable of integrating the material, symbolic, and historical dimensions of social life.; El artículo analiza la genealogía teórica del concepto antropológico de cultura, identificando dos grandes patrones epistemológicos que han estructurado su desarrollo histórico: la tradición ilustrada y la tradición romántica.

Mobile markets, or tianguis, as spaces for the transmission of a cuisine with ancestral roots.
The general objective of this text is to provide an approach to the dynamics of selling edible natural products of pre-Hispanic origin in a weekly market in the city of Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. Fieldwork was carried out from March to July 2025 and was complemented by a prior annual record of seasonal product sales. For data collection, an ethnographic field diary and photographic records were used, along with direct observation techniques, anthropological interviews, and informal conversations. In this work, we are interested in repositioning within academic perspectives the importance of traditional markets as spaces of cultural resistance against the homogenization of consumption promoted by the food agroindustry; revaluing the female vendors, locally known as marchantas, as knowledgeable transmitters of an ancestral cuisine that is nutritious and culturally appropriate, and providing elements to inform public policies aimed at improving the nutritional security of local populations.; El objetivo general de este texto es brindar un acercamiento a la dinámica de venta de productos naturales comestibles de origen prehispánico en un mercado semanal de la ciudad de Xalapa, Veracruz, México.

Stress is currently one of the most prominent phenomena, with chronic stress significantly impacting individuals’ health across various dimensions. Particularly, academic stress affects university students during their educational journey, detrimentally influencing their quality of life. However, in Chile, there are few studies exploring the correlation between chronic physiological stress and the multifaceted aspects of psychological stress. Objective: This study aims to assess the relationship between hair cortisol levels and self-perceived psychological stress among university students. Subjects and methods: A sample comprising 38 students from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Chile underwent evaluation for chronic stress through hair cortisol analysis, alongside self-reported stress perception utilizing the Global Perception of State Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and the nonparametric Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U test were employed for data analysis. Results: The findings revealed that 34% of the students exhibited elevated levels of cortisol in their hair. Moreover, a correlation was observed between cortisol levels and memory function among female participants, as well as between cortisol levels and the “physical symptoms” dimension of the CPGE among male participants. Conclusion: This study underscores a nuanced association between perceived stress and hair cortisol levels, indicating that while certain psychological stress indicators may not consistently align with high cortisol levels, they should be addressed independently.

Circulation and mobility of the Sewing Machine in Nitrate Territories and Lican Antay Communities (1870–1950); Circulación y movilidad de la máquina de coser en territorios salitreros y Lican Antay (1870-1950)
This article examines the circulation, appropriation, and re-signification of the sewing machine in northern Chile, focusing on nitrate territories and Lican Antay Indigenous communities between the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. Through a qualitative methodology that integrates historical, ethnographic, and material sources, the study analyzes how this technical-industrial artifact was domesticated in productive, educational, and everyday contexts, giving rise to new forms of clothing, labor, and female agency. Far from representing a mere technological transfer, the sewing machine was embedded in local frameworks of meaning, intertwining visual regimes, ancestral textile knowledge, and moral economies of dress. In this process, hybrid aesthetics and specific modes of sewing emerged, revealing how communities reconfigured their relationship with modernity and industry according to their own cultural coordinates.
