Multilingualism, inclusion or a cultural erasure? Micro-level policies and language practices amongst transnational families of Northern Ireland (United Kingdom)

Multilingualism, inclusion or a cultural erasure? Micro-level policies and language practices amongst transnational families of Northern Ireland (United Kingdom); ¿Multilingüismo, inclusión o borrado cultural?
The article analyses the family language policies of Indian transnational parents who are first generation migrants in Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. Although the Good Friday Agreement (1998) recognises the linguistic diversity of the region and calls for “respect, understanding and tolerance” towards the languages of the various ethnic communities, debates around governmental language policy and planning primarily concentrate on its two indigenous languages: Irish and Ulster-Scots. However, in this region, many other languages coexist, particularly those from the migrant communities. However, there is no governmental policy to protect or promote these languages. Drawing on ethnographic observations and two focus groups, the article explores the language dynamics of eight Belfast-based families. The findings demonstrate how these parents become policy intermediaries by supervising their children’s home language learning through explicit teaching, creating a supportive literacy environment, ensuring its use in the family through continuous monitoring, and developing identity through constant dialogue with children about the culture of their country of origin. The analysis of their discourses and actions, including the family dynamics such as negotiations, appropriations, or the implementations of certain linguistic decisions, provides insights into the ideologies behind the use or non-use of the home language(s) in the migration contexts.; Este trabajo examina las prácticas lingüísticas de progenitores transnacionales para mantener su(s) lengua(s) de origen.

Intercultural competence in the production of foreign language teaching materials in multicultural and multilingual contexts: an exploratory approach

Intercultural competence in the production of foreign language teaching materials in multicultural and multilingual contexts: an exploratory approach; La competencia intercultural en la producción de materiales para la enseñanza de lenguas extranjeras en contextos multiculturales y multilingües: un enfoque exploratorio
In our increasingly interconnected and globalized world, foreign language teaching is more vital than ever, and its acquisition involves not only the ability to communicate linguistically but also requires students to navigate intercultural contexts. Intercultural competence must therefore focus on sociocultural knowledge and the ability to understand and respond to cultural norms in diverse communicative contexts. This study analyzes intercultural competence in the production of foreign language teaching materials in multicultural and multilingual contexts. Through a theoretical review and a critical analysis of existing materials, the limitations of traditional approaches that reproduce homogeneous and exclusionary cultural representations are identified. This qualitative documentary study seeks to deepen and offer a comprehensive view that is vital for understanding the incorporation of intercultural competence in the production of foreign language teaching materials, integrating critical, pluricultural, and socially engaged perspectives. Pedagogical criteria and specific strategies are proposed for the design of educational resources that promote intercultural dialogue, inclusion, and the recognition of linguistic and cultural diversity.

<Echar(se) a + infinitive> as an inchoative verbal periphrasis: delimitation, contrast, and characterization

<Echar(se) a + infinitive> as an inchoative verbal periphrasis: delimitation, contrast, and characterization; <Echar(se) a + infinitivo> como perífrasis verbal incoativa: delimitación, contraste y caracterización
Although there are numerous constructions with inchoative meaning within the category of verbal periphrases in Spanish, they are a relatively understudied typology compared to others (Van Hulle, 2024). Bearing this aspect in mind, the aim of this work is to characterize one of the most frequently used periphrases with an inchoative meaning: . To this end, examples are taken from the COSER corpus (http://www.corpusrural.es/index.php), from which the characteristics and limitations of this structure in oral discourse are analyzed from a temporal, aspectual, and syntactic point of view. As a starting point, attention is paid to the concept of “inchoativity,” as there is some controversy in its treatment in the literature (Martínez-Atienza, 2021). In addition, a description of is offered in contrast to the rest of the periphrases that are also defined as inchoative and ingressive, such as or , among others. In this way, the differences between them are determined and the reason why it is interesting to study this construction in depth is justified, among others: 1) it has a pronominal variable and a nonpronominal variable
(Carrasco Gutiérrez, 2006a and 2006b); 2) itis a structure that sometimes has non-periphrastic uses; and 3) it restricts the type of auxiliary verbs which it can be combined with. The analysis mainly takes into account the categories of tense and aspect, the semantic features they select, and the verbs which they most commonly appear with. In short, it delves into the characteristics of this type of periphrasis, in particular , providing new data that allows for a better understanding of how it works.; A pesar de que, dentro de la categoría de perífrasis verbales, las construcciones con valor incoativo en español son muy numerosas, suponen una tipología relativamente poco estudiada con respecto a otras (Van Hulle, 2024).

Glottopolitical realignments in Coetzee’s recent fiction in spanish: Multilingualism and translation

Glottopolitical realignments in Coetzee’s recent fiction in spanish: Multilingualism and translation; Reconfiguraciones glotopolíticas en las últimas ficciones de Coetzee en español: Multilingüismo y traducción
This article examines the relationships between multilingualism, translation, and the intersection between politics and language through the analysis of the most recent fictional works published by South African writer J. Coetzee in Argentina. From a perspective that articulates multilingualism and translation in cultural and political terms, we propose an analysis of Coetzee’s case, focusing on his strategic decision to publish his latest novels in Spanish, through Argentine translators and publishing houses. This editorial shift away from traditional publishing centres in favour of others located in the South reveals not only a reconfiguration of literary circulation circuits, but also an ideological gesture that challenges the usual hierarchy among languages and publishing markets. The study is structured in four sections: first, we contextualize the author’s figure and his editorial decision; second, we examine the intercultural phenomenon of multilingualism; third, we address translation as a cultural operation; and finally, we analyze the publication process of Coetzee’s recent works from a glottopolitical perspective, paying close attention to the author’s varied interventions regarding Spanish as the first language of circulation of his fiction and the consequent reordering of the symbolic status attributed to English.; El presente artículo examina las relaciones entre multilingüismo, traducción y glotopolítica a partir del análisis de las más recientes ficciones publicadas por el escritor sudafricano John Coetzee en Argentina.
