Este artículo indaga sobre el papel central que tiene la ética, en especial la discusión sobre sus límites, en la vida cotidiana de los pobladores de La Victoria. Enfrentados a la incertidumbre diaria que proviene de las distintas posibilidades de acción, opinión y decisión, los pobladores han desarrollado una fuerza que emana de sus relaciones sociales y les permite mantener sus convicciones –o límites éticos– en el tiempo. Esta fuerza es a lo que muchos pobladores en distintas conversaciones llaman coloquialmente ‘control’. En el artículo describo el origen y principales características del control, para mostrar finalmente cómo el reconocimiento de éste por parte de otros pobladores es una vía para alinear a diversos grupos en torno a distinciones comunes.This paper delves into the central role of ethics, particularly the discussions about its limits, within the daily life of the inhabitants of La Victoria. Faced with the everyday uncertainty that comes from the different possible courses of action, opinion and decision, pobladores have developed a source of strength that is rooted in their social interactions and that allows them to sustain their convictions – or ethical limits – through time. This strength is referred to by pobladores, in their own conversations, as ‘control’. In this paper I describe the source and main characteristics of control, in order to finally show how the recognition of control in others constitutes a way in which different groups can converge around shared ethical distinctions.
