En los próximos años, Chile será el país latinoamericano con mayor tasa de adultos mayores. El programa Garantías Explícitas en Salud de salud oral integral del adulto de 60 años (GES-60 años) garantiza el cuidado y tratamiento de la salud oral de este grupo etario. Sin embargo, éste presenta muy baja cobertura y utilización en sus servicios. Este artículo entrega una serie de hipótesis para explicar este fenómeno y propone una estrategia de intervención al programa, con el fin de aumentar esta cobertura y en consecuencia buscar un mejoramiento en los índices de salud bucal y en la calidad de vida de estas personas.In the coming years, Chile will become the Latin American country with the highest prevalence of elderly people. The Explicit Health Guarantees program of integral oral health in persons aged 60 or older (GES-60) guarantees care and treatment for this age group. However, coverage of the program and usage of its services is low. This article raises a number of hypotheses to explain this phenomenon, and proposes an intervention strategy in order to increase coverage, thus improving rates of oral health and quality of life for these individuals
