dc.descriptionIntroducción: El virus de inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH) y su etapa final, el síndrome de inmunodeficiencia adquirida (sida), han estado presentes en Chile desde 1984. Aunque las nuevas notificaciones han disminuido en la última década, ha habido un alarmante repunte de nuevas infecciones en ciertos rangos etarios. La situación en Chile, en cuanto a la experiencia de los afectados, no ha sido bien documentada, a diferencia de otros países en Latinoamérica. Objetivo: Describir las definiciones, vivencias y significados de la experiencia de ser un paciente de VIH/sida entre usuarios de la ONG Redes de Orientación en Salud Social (RED OSS). Material y Método: Investigación de carácter cualitativo, basado en el estudio de casos. Se usó la entrevista en profundidad como herramienta de recolección de información aplicada a un total de seis individuos con VIH/ sida. Se hizo análisis de contenido de las transcripciones y análisis fenomenológico para la descripción de la esencia de la experiencia de ser diagnosticado como portador de VIH/sida. Para asegurar la validez del dato se optó por la auditoria durante todo el proceso investigativo y la triangulación de analistas. Resultados: Los individuos entrevistados usan definiciones basadas en el lenguaje biomédico transmitido por prestadores y campañas de salud. Las vivencias presentadas, pese a ser diversas, tienen como puntos en común la estigmatización, el rol de la enfermedad en sus vidas y la importancia de redes de apoyo. La enfermedad significa una carga ligada tanto a lo emocional como a las responsabilidades prácticas surgidas posdiagnóstico.es-ES
dc.descriptionIntroduction: The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and its final stage, Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), have been present in Chile since 1984. Although the overall incidence has decreased in the past decade, there has been an alarming increase of new infections in a few age groups. The situation of VIH/AIDS in Chile, in terms of the experiences of the affected individuals, has not been well documented, in contrast to other countries in Latin America. Objectives: To describe how users of the NGO “Redes de Orientación en Salud Social” (RED OSS) [Networks for Social Health Orientation] define, live, and signify their experiences as HIV/AIDS patients. Materials and methods: A qualitative investigation, based on case studies. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with 6 individuals with HIV/AIDS. Content and phenomenological analysis of the interviews was conducted to describe the participants’ experiences . The validity of the data was ensured the supervision of the research process and triangulation of the analysis between various analysts. Results: The study participants utilized definitions based on biomedical language, transmitted by health care professionals and health campaigns. Though diverse, all of the lived experiences emphasized stigmatization, the role of the disease in their lives, and the importance of support systems. The disease signifies an emotional and a practical burden, in terms of the responsibilities that are acquired once diagnosed.en-US
