| dc.description | Th e arrival of Spanish conquerors and the imposition of Catholic doctrine produced profound changes in the cosmovisions of America’s indigenous cultures. Focusing on the discovery of the San José de la Mocha Mission in Concepción, this article reflects on the impact of the Catholic faith on Mapuche culture through the analysis of pre-Hispanic funerary patterns found in the southern-central region of Chile. As a result, this study identifies two situations: on one hand, contexts where territorial and spiritual domination is manifest through the arbitrariness of a homogenizing treatment of death; and, on the other hand, the emergence of a funerary syncretism in the area to the south of the limit of Spanish dominion, where Mapuche funerary rites, although incorporating foreign elements, exhibit a continuity with traditional practices. | en-US |
| dc.description | La llegada de los conquistadores españoles y la imposición de la doctrina católica produjo profundos cambios en las cosmovisiones de los grupos nativos de América. A partir del descubrimiento de la antigua Misión San José de la Mocha en Concepción, refl exionamos sobre el impacto causado por la implantación de la fe católica en el pueblo mapuche, mediante la evaluación de los patrones funerarios existentes en la zona centro-sur de Chile en tiempos prehispánicos. Así, se identifi can dos situaciones: por una parte, la presencia de contextos donde la dominación territorial y espiritual se manifi esta de manera clara en la arbitrariedad de un tratamiento homogeneizante de la muerte y, por otra, la manifestación de un sincretismo funerario en la zona al sur de la antigua frontera, donde los contextos funerarios mapuche muestran una continuidad con aquellos tradicionales, aunque incorporando rasgos foráneos. | es-ES |
