This article problematizes the situation of mutualism between1930 and 1960 in Chile, starting with a case study that confrontsgeneral views built by historiography. In spite of thecreation of the Social Security, mutualism had not entered itsfinal phase, essentially because not all the workers could insurethemselves. Those who could ensure themselves oftencould not permanently do it because of a breach with theiremployers or some other reason. Consequently, the cultureof mutualism could not maintain itself without also revitalizingitself. With regards to this subject, we see that mutualismemerged as an active form of sociability and was much moreinteractive on local and regional levels than in the period oftransition from the ninetieth century to the twentieth century,which was when mutualism was strongly stressed due to theprogress of secularization and the reactions of clergymen. Atthe same time from the perspective of social composition, justas with the socio-political initiatives, they are identified as belongingto the middle and lower classes. Obviously, this studypresents a reflection about this problem based on a particularcase and thus its conclusions are not to be generalization.Keywords: Mutualism, trade-unionism, sociability, social insuranceEn este artículo se problematiza sobre la situación del mutualismoentre 1930 y 1960 en Chile a partir de un estudio de casoque se confronta con las miradas generales que ha construidola historiografía. Se constata que, a pesar de la creación delSeguro Social el mutualismo no entró en una fase terminal,esencialmente porque no todos los trabajadores pudieronasegurarse y los que sí pudieron, no siempre lo estuvieronde modo permanente, ya sea por el incumplimiento de suspatrones o por alguna otra razón; en consecuencia, la culturamutualista pudo no solo mantenerse sino además revitalizarse.En el área estudiada, apreciamos que el mutualismo emergecomo una forma de sociabilidad muy activa y mucho másinteractiva en términos locales y regionales que la que habíatenido en la transición del siglo XIX al XX, momento en quefueron fuertemente tensionadas por el avance de la secularizacióny las reacciones del clero. A su vez, desde el punto devista de su composición social, como de sus iniciativas sociopolíticas,pasan a ser más bien identificadoras de los gruposmedios o bajos. Obviamente que siendo este estudio una reflexiónde un problema desde lo particular, sus conclusionesno tienen un afán generalizador.Palabras clave: mutualismo, asociacionismo, sociabilidad, segurosocial.
