This paper faithfully reproduces the main talk of Antofagasta V Theological Week. The author starts briefly analyzing the difficulties for man today to understand the term “mercy”. Then, he focuses on the analysis of this issue in the Bible, by studying the main terms used in it. He presents the Old Testament image of a faithful God, full of tenderness and compassion, who keeps his fidelity despite human sins. This is the God of Alliance. In the NT, mercy has a strong Christological nuance: Jesus is the best manifestation of the merciful face of God, who moves in front of misled crowds and those suffering. The Bible presents mercy mainly as God’s action, making possible a merciful response from human beings. Este artículo reproduce sin modificaciones la ponencia inaugural de la V Semana Teológica de Antofagasta. El autor comienza analizando someramente las dificultades de comprensión que plantea para el hombre actual el término «misericordia». Luego se concentra en un análisis del tema de la misericordia en la Biblia, y lo hace estudiando los principales términos usados para hablar de ella. Presenta la imagen veterotestamentaria de un Dios fiel, lleno de ternura y compasión, que mantiene su fidelidad a pesar del pecado humano. Este es el Dios de la Alianza. En el NT el tema de la misericordia tiene un fuerte matiz cristológico: Jesús es la mejor manifestación del rostro misericordioso de Dios, que se conmueve frente a las multitudes desorientadas y los sufrientes. La Biblia presenta la misericordia principalmente como una acción de Dios, que hace posible una respuesta misericordiosa de parte del ser humano.
