The article analyzes the result of the Uruguayan elections held in October 2004, establishes its causes and evaluates its main consequences on the política! system. Particularly the article points out that the elections showed !he greatest volatility in Uruguayan history, a strong reduction of the party system fragmentation, and !he formation of a majority government for the first time in almost forty years. On that base, !he article also analyzes the institutional and political features of the leftist government, taking into account additionally, the strong presidential powers, the legislative discipline of the govemmental party, and its ideological dispersion.El artículo analiza los resultados de las elecciones uruguayas de octubre de 2004, establece sus causas y evalúa las principales consecuencias que pueden generar sobre el sistema político. Particularmente se señala que las elecciones mostraron la mayor volatilidad de la historia uruguaya, una fuerte reducción de la fragmentación partidaria, y la constitución de un gobierno con mayoría propia por primera vez en casi cuarenta años. Sobre esa base, también se analizan las condicionantes institucionales y políticas del gobierno de la izquierda, tomando en cuenta, además, los importantes poderes institucionales del presidente, la disciplina legislativa del partido gobernante y la dispersión ideológica que existe en su seno.
