Great powers are those States that establish the rules of the system and that have the resources and capacities necessary to mobilize them optimally in defense of those rules. This article presents a reflection on the validity of the concept of power, starting from the basis that a power is more than a nation-state. Although the physical dimension is very important, it is not the only element to assess the capacity of a State in the international system. Military power has also always been one of the first attributes to take into account when evaluating a State, but in addition, it must have excellent material, industrial and military resources, supported by an economically flourishing base. Although power is a fundamental requirement, the will of the State to use that power is essential.Las potencias son aquellos Estados que establecen las reglas del sistema y que disponen de los recursos y de las capacidades necesarias para movilizarlos de forma óptima en defensa de dichas reglas. El presente artículo presenta una reflexión acerca de la vigencia del concepto de potencia, partiendo de la base que una potencia es más que un Estado-nación. Aunque la dimensión física es muy importante, no es el único elemento para valorar la capacidad de un Estado en el sistema internacional. El poder militar también ha sido siempre uno de los primeros atributos a tener en cuenta para la valoración de un Estado, pero además, debe contar con excelentes recursos materiales, industriales y militares, sustentados en una base económicamente floreciente. Si bien el poder es requisito fundamental, es imprescindible la voluntad del Estado de usar dicho poder.
