It is in the twentieth century that the study of International Relations acquired the characteristics of an academic discipline. As the scientific development of the discipline intensified, an intense debate was generated about its scope, emphasis and methodology. This resulted in the multiplicity of approaches to its study, of existing theories and of favored methods. Faced with this pluralism of orientations, the general trend seems to be to promote the complementarity of approaches as a way to enrich the discipline of International Relations. For its part, Latin America lacks an important and adequate endowment of education and research institutions that allow it to have the specialists and studies necessary for the formulation and conduct of its international policy. However, the current context seems highly conducive to undertaking a vast effort at the regional level in pursuit of a scientific development of the discipline.Es en el siglo XX que el estudio de las Relaciones Internacionales adquirió las características de una disciplina académica. Al intensificarse el desarrollo científico de la disciplina, se generó un intenso debate sobre su alcance, énfasis y metodología. Esto se tradujo en la multiplicidad de enfoques para su estudio, de teorías existentes y de métodos propiciados. Ante este pluralismo de orientaciones, la tendencia general parece ser la de propiciar la complementariedad de los enfoques como una manera de enriquecer la disciplina de las Relaciones Internacionales. Por su parte, América Latina carece de una dotación importante y adecuada de instituciones de docencia e investigación que Ie permita contar con los especialistas y los estudios necesarios para la formulación y conducción de su política internacional. Sin embargo, el contexto actual parece altamente propicio para emprender un vasto esfuerzo a nivel regional en pos de un desarrollo científico de la disciplina.
