Este trabajo se refiere al marco mundial y regional dentro del cual se producen los cambios en la zona del Caribe. Tiene como punto de partida la convicción de que la organización de la economía mundial sufre espectaculares cambios y que está derivando hacia un sistema económico y político de carácter transnacional y mundial, con sus propias instituciones y sus propias modalidades de funcionamiento. Al mismo tiempo, existe también el surgimiento de sistemas regionales de centro y periferia; estos, aun cuando están relacionados con el sistema mundial, muestran sus propios conjuntos de relaciones que difieren en alguna medida de los relacionados con las vinculaciones generales entre centro y periferia, y que atañen principalmente a la proximidad geográfica. El Caribe forma parte de uno de estos sistemas, lo que tiene consecuencias evidentes para su futuro.This paper refers to the global and regional framework within which changes occur in the Caribbean area. Its starting point is the conviction that the organization of the world economy is undergoing spectacular changes and that it is drifting towards an economic and political system of a transnational and global nature, with its own institutions and its own operating modalities. At the same time, there is also the emergence of regional systems of center and periphery; These, even when related to the world system, show their own sets of relationships that differ to some extent from those related to the general links between the center and the periphery, and which mainly concern geographical proximity. The Caribbean is part of one of these systems, which has obvious consequences for its future.
