| dc.description | This article examines some of the main characteristics of modern Cuba, in order to determine which were the significant factors of the process that culminated with the revolution and may have influenced it. The first characteristic to consider is posed in the form of a racial question: What is a Cuban? The second lies in the fact that the island was a Spanish colony for longer than any other. It should also be considered that Cuba was for almost 30 years after its nominal independence virtually a political colony of the United States. And finally, it is necessary to mention two other factors: first, the special role of sugar in the development of the Cuban economy and the special characteristics of its society, so different from those of the rest of Latin America. | en-US |
| dc.description | En este artículo se examinan algunas de las características principales de Ia Cuba moderna, con el objeto de determinar cuáles fueron los factores de significación en el proceso que culmina con la revolución y pueden haber influenciado como esta se desarrolló. La primera característica a considerar se plantea en forma de interrogante racial: ¿Qué es un cubano? La segunda radica en el hecho de que la isla fue colonia española durante más tiempo que ninguna otra. También se debe considerar que Cuba fue durante casi 30 años después de su independencia nominal una virtual colonia política de Estados Unidos. Y, por último, es necesario mencionar otros dos factores: primero, el papel especial del azúcar en el desarrollo de la economía cubana y las características especiales de su sociedad, tan diferentes a las del resto de América Latina. | es-ES |
