| dc.description | The wave of violence that unleashed between Palestinians and Israelis after Ariel Sharon's visit to the Temple Mount-Haram el Sahriff, or area of the shrine of Omar and the al Aqsa mosque, in the old city of Jerusalem, at the end of September 2001, marked the beginning of a new kind of war. These events, which received the qualification of armed intifada or intifada of al Aqsa - differentiating it from the first intifada that broke out at the end of 1987 and which only ceased after the signing of the Oslo Agreement and the Declaration of Principles on Palestinian-Israeli negotiations - produced many victims on both sides, political instability, extensive economic damage, mutual distrust at the population and elite level, as well as the derailment of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, which, despite ups and downs, continued to take place between 1993 and 2000. | en-US |
| dc.description | La ola de violencia que se desató entre palestinos e israelíes tras la visita de Ariel Sharon al Monte del Templo-Haram el Sahriff, o zona del santuario de Omar y a la mezquita de al Aqsa, en la ciudad antigua de Jerusalem, a fines de septiembre de 2001, marcó el inicio de un nuevo tipo de guerra. Estos sucesos, que recibieron el calificativo de intifada armada o intifada de al Aqsa –diferenciándola de la primera intifada que estalló afines de 1987 y que solo cesó tras la firma del Acuerdo de Oslo y la Declaración de Principios sobre las negociaciones palestino-israelíes– produjeron muchas víctimas en ambas partes, inestabilidad política, cuantiosos daños económicos, desconfianza mutua a nivel poblacional y de élites, así como también el descarrilamiento del proceso de paz israelí-palestino, el cual, pese a altibajos, seguía llevándose a cabo entre 1993 y 2000. | es-ES |
