Analyzing the case of the Church in Brazil, this article aims to provide a partial answer to the question regarding whether it is possible today to study the problems of the Church based on the concept of "elasticity of traditional structures" that defines Latin American societies. Until 1952 the Brazilian Church neglected the national organization: the isolated parishes communicated with each other through the diocesan Curia and the dioceses related directly to Rome and only secondarily with each other. The form and function of the Church changed very rapidly, in various aspects, during the 50-60 period. However, weighing heavily against it, when the actions of the Catholic radicals in Brazil are analyzed, and an accurate explanation is sought for their ineffectiveness, we must note the powerful political coercion against the "aggiornamento" since the military coup in 1964, which were intensified when the 5th Institutional Act was issued, in December 1968.Analizando el caso de la Iglesia en Brasil, este artículo pretende dar una respuesta parcial a la interrogante respecto a si es posible hoy en día estudiar los problemas de la Iglesia partiendo del concepto de "elasticidad de las estructuras tradicionales" que define a las sociedades latinoamericanas. Hasta 1952 la Iglesia brasileña descuidó la organización nacional: las parroquias aisladas se comunicaban entre sí a través de la Curia diocesana y las diócesis se relacionaban directamente con Roma y solo en forma secundaria entre sí. La forma y funcionamiento de la Iglesia cambió muy rápidamente, en diversos aspectos, durante el periodo 50-60. Sin embargo, pesando muchísimo en contra, cuando se analiza la actuación de los radicales católicos en el Brasil, y se busca una explicación certera a su poca efectividad, hay que hacer notar las poderosas coerciones políticas contra el "aggiornamento" desde el golpe militar en 1964, que se intensificaron cuando se dictó la 5a Acta Institucional en diciembre de 1968.
