Latin America's international economic relations have undergone substantial alterations during the 1970s. Two of the most notable were the accelerated increase in current account deficits in most of their countries and the significant changes in the financing of these deficits. This paper analyzes the origin, conditions and objectives of external financing in the 1970s, examines the peculiarities that distinguished both world markets in that decade, as well as the economic situation of the countries of the region in those aspects that more affect the ability to access external bank financing. Some of the central questions that are present in the early eighties are briefly outlined below. On these bases, some reflections are raised on the consequences, positive and negative, that the different alternatives could have for the countries of the region.Las relaciones económicas internacionales de América Latina han experimentado alteraciones sustanciales durante los años setenta. Dos de las más destacadas fueron el aumento acelerado de los déficit en cuenta corriente en la mayoría de sus países y los cambios significativos producidos en el financiamiento de esos déficit. En este trabajo se analiza el origen, condiciones y objetivos del financiamiento externo en los años setenta, se examinan las peculiaridades que distinguieron tanto a los mercados mundiales en aquella década, así como también la situación económica de los países de la región en aquellos aspectos que más inciden en la capacidad de acceso al financiamiento bancario externo. En seguida se esbozan brevemente algunos de los interrogantes centrales que están presentes al iniciarse los ochenta. Sobre esas bases se plantean algunas reflexiones sobre las consecuencias, positivas y negativas, que las distintas alternativas podrían tener para los países de la región.
