The Philippines was ruled by Spain from 1565 to 1898. Spanish influence has persisted in religion, language, laws and ethical values, and culture. That is why it has been described as a "Latin country" in Asia. However, the pre-eminent and basic influence of pre-Hispanic culture similar to that of its Asian neighbors must not be ruled out. In this culture there are also Chinese and Muslim influences. The most recent influence is North American, due to the occupation of the country until 1946 (interrupted by the Japanese occupation from 1941 to 1946). This has given way to an interesting development process that manages to overcome strong economic and political crises with its own stamp of the remarkable mix of cultures that historically occur in this nation.Filipinas fue regida por España desde 1565 a 1898. La influencia española ha persistido en la religión, en el idioma, en las leyes y valores éticos y en la cultura. Por eso ha sido descrito como un “país latino” en Asia. Sin embargo, no hay que descartar la influencia preeminente y básica de la cultura prehispánica semejante a la de sus vecinos asiáticos. En esta cultura hay también influencias chinas y musulmanas. La influencia más reciente es la norteamericana, debido a la ocupación del país hasta 1946 (interrumpida por la ocupación japonesa de 1941 a 1946). Esto ha dado paso a un interesante proceso de desarrollo que logra sobrepasar fuertes crisis económicas y políticas con un sello propio de la notable mezcla de culturas que se dan históricamente en esta nación.
