| dc.description | A través del estudio de expedientes judiciales y de documentación notarial, este artículo estudia los contrastes entre la población afro y afrodescendiente libre de la ciudad de Santiago de Chile durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII. Si algunos de ellos, principalmente artesanos y pequeños comerciantes, estaban inmersos en un proceso de ascenso social, que implicaba adoptar modos y costumbres “decentes”, además de participar en instituciones como milicias y cofradías; otros seguían siendo parte integral de la “plebe”, en la cual el empleo precario, la violencia rayana con el delito, la carencia en la constitución de relaciones sociales y el enfrentamiento con la autoridad, marcaban sus vidas. Por lo anterior, difícilmente se podría hablar de los afrodescendientes coloniales como un conglomerado social homogéneo, tratándose más bien de una realidad compleja, signada por la discriminación y las representaciones negativas, pero también por el desarrollo de proyectos personales y grupales.Palabras clave: afrodescendientes, decencia, plebe, relaciones sociales. | es-ES |
| dc.description | Through the study of judicial records and notarial documentation, this article studies the contrasts among the free african and afrodescendant population of Santiago of Chile during the second half of the 18th century. If some of them, mainly craftsmen and small merchants, were immerse in a process of social ascent, wich implied adopting ‘’decent’’ manners and ways, besides participating in institutions like militias and guilds; others were still an integral part of the ‘’plebs’’, in wich employment was precarious, violence bordered on crime, the lack in the constitution of social relationships and confrontation with authorithy, marked their lives. For the above, we could hardly talk about the colonial afrodescendants as an homogeneus social conglomerate, being rather a complex reality, signed by discrimination and negative representations, but by the development of personal and group projects as well.Key words: afrodescendants, decency, plebs, social relationships. | en-US |
