OBJECTIVE: To analyze how Ibero-American scientific literature has contributed to the understanding of psychosocial matters of sexual and reproductive health in college students. METHOD: A retrospective observational study was carried out. The universe was composed of Ibero-American magazines published online between 2005 and 2014 in the areas of psychology, higher education, public health and related disciplines. The sample consisted of articles addressing the psychosocial matters of the topic in question. FINDINGS: Results highlight the fact that students’ perception of being at risk of getting a sexually transmitted disease is low. The number of students who use condoms in their first sexual intercourse is low. This number drops even lower as their sexual activity increases in time and other sexual practices such as oral and anal sex are explored or practiced. These two last practices happen because avoiding pregnancy is students’ main goal. DISCUSSION: Delivering information about the risks of getting sexually transmitted diseases is not enough. When promoting health, it is important to plan more concrete strategies to increase awareness of such risks.es-ES
