AbstractIn order to establish a bovine brucellosis monitoring system at slaughter, 2150 bovine serum samples were collected from april to august 1993. Additionaly, information about category, age, race, origin, sex and the strain 19 vaccine eartag was obtained. The results showed that the samples came from 85 farms with a 66.7% of the animals and from five cattle market located in the province of Valdivia. All samples were analyzed by the Rose Bengal test, resulting a farm prevalence of 17.4% and an individual prevalence of 2.7%. The reacting sera were analyzed by the Rivanol test, obtaining a 14.1 % and 1.8% of farm and individual prevalence, respectively. In relation with categories, cows 4.5 year old and older showed the greatest percentage of positive reactions (10.3 and 8.9% by the Rose Bengale and Rivanol test respectively).Furthermore in 19.8% of the farms and 9.7% of the cattle market, the females kept their strain 19 vaccination eartag. Refering to the positive reacting females, the highest percentage came from the county of Maf l (9.6%). A monitoring system in the slaughterhouse is very useful, of low cost but must be complemented with monitoring the cattle market, creating thus a flow of information between them which facilitates the follow up of the cattle.Key words: Brucelosis monitoring, surveillance.es-ES
