Se evaluaron 2 sistemas comerciales de identificación animal con microchip por medio de la implantación de 60 novillos de una engorda intensiva. Se compararon dos sitios de implante, detrás del nacimiento de los cuernos y depresión supra orbital, analizando persistencia, facilidad de implante, lectura y recuperación de los identificadores al momento del beneficio. Durante los 4 meses del ensayo se realizaron lecturas a los días 6, 30, 60, 90 y 120, evaluándose el número de identificadores en funcionamiento en cada oportunidad. Los resultados obtenidos permiten concluir que no hubo diferencias entre los 2 sistemas de identificación electrónica. Sin embargo, aquellos microchip implantados en la depresión supra orbital presentaban mayor facilidad de implante, lectura y recuperación. Los sistemas de identificación evaluados no produjeron alteraciones locales y/o generales ni afectaron el bienestar animal.Palabras clave: novillos, identificación, electrónica.AbstractTwo commercial microchip identification systems (TROVAN and DESTRON) were evaluated by implanting 60 young steers of an intensive finishing system. The adequacy of two implant zones (behind the base of the horns and the supra orbital depression) was determined, comparing persistence, ease of implantation, reading and microchip recuperation after slaughtering. During the four months of the experiment, five readings were carried out (days 6, 30, 60, 90, and 120), evaluating in each opportunity the number of microchips in operation. The results showed that there were no differences between the two identification systems. However, it was noted that implanting, reading and recovering the microchips from the supra orbital depression was easier. It was also observed that the identification systems didn't produce local or general reactions neither affect the animal's welfare.Key words: steers, electronic, identification.
