The press is the oldest mass media there is, and although at presentthe technologies have changed the medium in which these texts arepublished or how they reach readers, the journalistic discourse hascertain features that allow us to know something of the society inwhich it occurs and, because of this, are a reflection of the societyin a certain moment. For this reason, and on the occasion of theBicentennial of Chile, it is pertinent to go back to the beginnings of thepress in our country and try to approach the period of independencethrough the journalistic texts published in la Aurora de Chile and ElMonitor Araucano, the first newspapers in our country, through adiscursive approach, with special attention to the context and referentsof the daily life of the young country.    La prensa escrita es el medio de comunicación de masas más antiguoy, a pesar de que en la actualidad las tecnologías han modificadoel soporte en que se edita o la forma en que llega a los lectores, eldiscurso periodístico mantiene ciertos rasgos que permiten conoceralgo de la sociedad en que se produce y, por lo mismo, constituyeun reflejo de dicha sociedad en un momento determinado. Poreste motivo, y a propósito del Bicentenario de Chile, resultapertinente remontarse a los inicios de la prensa escrita en nuestropaís e intentar acercarse al período de la Independencia a través detextos periodísticos publicados en la Aurora de Chile y El MonitorAraucano, dos de los primeros periódicos editados en nuestro país, através de un enfoque discursivo, y con especial atención al contextoy referentes sobre la vida cotidiana del entonces joven país.
