| dc.description | In 2006 Guatemala reached two important anniversaries: the 20th anniversary of the democratic process, as well as the 10th anniversary of the signature of the peace accords. The year was characterized by an early start of the electoral campaign for the elections that will take place in September, 2007. This madeit harder to reach agreements between the Executive and the Legislative branches and led to the further fragmentation of the political parties represented in Congress. On the side of governmental policies, there was stagnation in social policies and a continued deterioration of the public security system. | en-US |

El año se caracterizó por un temprano inicio de la campaña electoral para las elecciones que tendrán lugar en septiembre, 2007. Esto hizo que se dificultara llegar a acuerdos entre las ramas Ejecutiva y Legislativa y llevó a una mayor fragmentación de los partidos políticos representados en el Congreso.
