dc.descriptionSince the founding of the People›s Republic of China in 1949 until the beginning of the diplomatic truce in 2008, China and Taiwan have competed for being recognized by the states. This article analyzes two of the latest episodes in this competition: Costa Rica and Nicaragua after the return to power of Oscar Arias (2006) and Daniel Ortega (2007). These cases have been chosen due to the surprise caused both by the establishment of relations between San Joseand Beijing, in June 2007, and the continuation of Managua’s recognition to Taipei. These paradoxical decisions can be explained because Arias prioritized the economic and diplomatic opportunities provided by China, while Ortega gave preference to development cooperation and in this field Taiwan was a more willing partner than China.en-US
dc.descriptionDesde la fundación de la República Popular China en 1949 hasta el inicio de la tregua diplomática en 2008, China y Taiwán han competido por el reconocimiento de los demás Estados. Este artículo analiza dos de los últimos episodios de esa disputa: Costa Rica y Nicaragua tras la vuelta al poder de Oscar Arias (2006) y Daniel Ortega (2007). Se han elegido estos casos por la sorpresa que causaron tanto el establecimiento de relaciones diplomáticas entre San José y Pekín en junio de 2007 como el mantenimiento del reconocimiento de Managua a Taipéi. Estas paradojas se explican porque Arias priorizó las oportunidades económicas y diplomáticas que le brindaba China, mientras que Ortega antepuso la cooperación al desarrollo y en este ámbito Taiwán se mostró como un socio más dispuesto que China.es-ES
