dc.descriptionUnlike in the two previous presidential elections, The Concertación failed to pass the 50% threshold in the first round vote in 1999. Some have argued that the economic crisis and the long tenure of the Concertación in government explain the fall in the vote share. Yet, months after that election, with the economy still struggling, the Concertación obtained 52.1% of thevote in the municipal election. Here we explore a model with political variables to account for the difference in the Concertación vote share in both elections. To explain the larger Concertación vote share in the 2000 municipal elections we use the “PDC Presence”. Weconstruct that variable with data that includes the presence of PDC candidates for the Senate and Chamber of Deputies in every district, the presence of PDC senators, deputies, mayors, regional intendentes and provincial governors in all municipalities in the country. Using a statistical model that includes socio-demographic variables and the “PDC presence” we explain the vote share difference between the Concertación vote in the 1999 presidential elections andthe 2000 municipal elections. We show that Lagos vote share in 1999 was negatively influenced by PDC presence in the nation’s municipalities. As the PDC presence grew, the vote share for Lagos decreased with regards to the vote share for the Concertación in 2000.en-US
dc.descriptionA diferencia de las dos elecciones presidenciales anteriores, la Concertación no logró superar la barrera del 50% de la votación en 1999. Algunos han argumentado que la mala situación económica y el desgaste de tantos años en el gobierno explican la caída en la votación por la coalición oficial. Pero sólo meses después de 1999, en un contexto similar, la coalición de gobierno sí superó el 52,1% en las elecciones municipales. Aquí exploramos un modelo con variables políticas que explican las diferencias en el desempeño electoral de la Concertación en esas dos elecciones. Para explicar la diferencia entre la votación que obtuvo la Concertación en las municipales del 2000 con la obtenida por Ricardo Lagos en 1999 utilizamos una variable que denominamos Presencia PDC. Esta variable la construimos a partir de la presencia de candidatos al parlamento del PDC y de senadores, diputados, alcaldes, intendentes y gobernadores del PDC en las comunas del país. Presentamos un modelo estadístico que utilizando variables sociodemográficas y presencia PDC explica la diferencia entre la votación obtenida por la Concertación en las municipales del 2000 y la lograda por Lagos en las presidenciales de 1999. Concluimos que la votación por Lagos en 1999 fue negativamente influida por la presencia PDC a nivel de comunas. Mientras más presencia PDC menor cantidad de votos recibió Lagos respecto a la Concertación en octubre del 2000.es-ES
