El rol de la variable sexo o género en sociolingüística: ¿diferencia, dominio o interacción?

| dc.description | This article deals with a critical overview of sociolinguistic variable sex or gender. To begin the discussion, the conceptual bases of both terms are analyzed as well as its relation to other social categories. The classic view of this variable as a dichotomy of the opposite concepts of dominance and difference is revised in order to show the highly impressionistic tenants of this approach, which has barely contributed to shed light on the real infl uence of this variable in sociolinguistic behavior. Empirically, the sex or gender variable may profitably be studied within the frame of a couple of analytical concepts from recent theoretical development in sociolinguistics and anthropology, namely, the notions of interaction and community of practice, which can give a more adequate account of how this variable may act as a relevant determinant in sociolinguistic behavior | en-US |
| dc.description | En este artículo se hace una revisión crítica de las teorías existentes sobre el rol de la variable sexo o género en la sociolingüística. Son analizadas las posturas relativas tanto a la nomenclatura (sexo o género), su relación con la categoría biológica sexo, y su vinculación con otros aspectos sociales. La clásica visión de esta variable como una dicotomía entre los conceptos opuestos de dominio o diferencia es reseñada con el objeto de mostrar que se trata de un enfoque cargado de impresionismo y de lugares comunes que poco han contribuido a develar el verdadero rol de esta variable y su correlación con fenómenos lingüísticos. En cambio, una perspectiva basada en los últimas teorías sociolingüísticas y antropológicas, basadas en aspectos como la interacción y las comunidades de práctica da cuenta de forma mucho más óptima de cómo funciona esta variable en los estudios sociolingüísticos. | es-ES |
