| dc.description | Resumen: El artículo trata sobre la relación entre religión y fi losofía moderna en tres momentos de la historia del siglo XIX chileno. Se plantea que la fundación de La Revista Católica en 1843 marca un momento de infl exión en la postura eclesiástica desde la defensa de su espacio jurisdiccional hacia su ingreso en la esfera pública como interlocutor en el campo ideológico impuesto por la civilización moderna. El acceso de Pío IX al papado inauguró un nuevo momento de confl ictos entre Iglesia y Estado en Chile por su condena al liberalismo.

Abstract: The article discusses the relationship between religion and modern philosophy in three moments of Chilean 19th C history. It asserts that with the foundation of La Revista Católica in 1843 the attitude of the clergy reaches a turning point moving from its concentration on the defense of its jurisdictional powers to its participation in the public sphere as interlocutor in the ideological fi eld imposed by modern civilization. The arrival of Pius IX as Pope, condemning liberalism, inaugurated a new moment of confl icts between church and state.
