In this paper we describe the perception which Spanish-speakingsubjects from Santiago de Chile have of the geographical variation ofChilean Spanish in terms of three dimensions: the similarity observedin the speech of various regions in relation to their own speech, thequality attached to regional varieties, and the pleasantness perceivedin them. These perceptions reveal the attitudes that the subjectshave towards the regional varieties of Chilean Spanish identified bythemselves. We conclude that people from Santiago de Chile have ahigh degree of linguistic self-esteem as they show a more favourableattitude towards the variety of Spanish spoken in the capital city andin the central region of Chile, in general, than towards the varietiesspoken in the northern and southern regions. Nevertheless, in theaffective dimension (pleasantness) and specially amongst peoplefrom the middle and lower classes, the southern variety increases itspositive valuation, although never surpassing the positive valuationof the central region of this country.En el presente artículo describimos la percepción que tienen loshispanohablantes santiaguinos de la variación geográfica del españolde Chile en términos de tres dimensiones valorativas: la similitud queobservan respecto del habla propia en el habla de distintos lugares,la calidad que atribuyen a las variedades percibidas y el agrado quesienten por ellas. Estas percepciones revelan las actitudes de lossujetos hacia las variedades geográficas que identifican en el españolchileno. Concluimos que, desde la perspectiva intranacional, lossantiaguinos poseen un alto grado de autoestima lingüística, puessu actitud hacia el habla de la capital y la zona central, en general,es más positiva que la que muestran hacia las zonas norte y sur. Sinembargo, en el dominio afectivo (agrado) y entre los segmentosmedios y bajos de la escala socioeconómica, el habla de la zona sur de Chile incrementa su valoración positiva, aunque sin superar la dela zona central del país.
