The usual form of ethnographic description, this is, how the ethnographer presents a human group, has been named ethnographic realism. This is because some traits of the literary realism of the XIX Century, as the importance of details, exhaustive descriptions, and the idea of completeness, also appeared in ethnographic texts. In “Ethnographies as texts” (1982), George Marcus y Dick Cushman described how the conventions of that genus allowed ethnography to give the sensation of create a world. From this perspective, we set out to analyze the construction of a realistic ethnographic text written in Patagonia by Anne Chapman with the last selk'nam, between 1964 and 1974.La forma de representación etnográfica habitual, esto es, el modo en que el etnógrafo presenta un grupo humano, se ha denominado realismo etnográfico, en una asimilación al movimiento literario del siglo XIX; porque algunos rasgos característicos del realismo literario tales como la importancia de los detalles, las descripciones minuciosas y la idea de totalidad, entre otros, se encuentran en los textos etnográficos. En “Las etnografías como textos”, un artículo de 1982, George Marcus y Dick Cushman se propusieron conceptuar y describir las convenciones de ese género que fueron las que permitieron a la etnografía dar “la sensación de crear un mundo”. A partir de esta perspectiva, nos proponemos analizar la construcción del texto etnográfíco -un texto realista- escrito por Anne Chapman con los últimos descendientes de los selk'nam en el ámbito patagónico entre 1964 y 1974.
