This paper analyses the memory's role as a discursive practice in the constitution of the communitarian identity, using the case of the Diaguitas rural locality (Elqui Valley) as an example. Through a rhetoric analysis of the discourse applied to a corpus of interviews, the accounts which give sense and continuity to the local history were identified, along with the identifying recounts they articulate. Memoirs and identities that emerged from them are used as political answers before the corporate globalization process, de-legitimizing this social order and questioning the notion of evolutionary and linear history, by going back to the remote indigenous past in search for new sources of meaning.Este trabajo analiza el rol de la memoria, en tanto práctica discursiva, en la constitución de identidades comunitarias, tomando el caso de la localidad rural de Diaguitas (Valle de Elqui). A partir de un análisis retórico de discurso aplicado a un corpus de entrevistas, se identificaron los relatos que dan sentido y continuidad a la historia local, junto a los correlatos identitarios que éstos articulan. De los resultados se destaca que las memorias y las identidades que de ellas emergen son utilizadas como respuestas políticas ante los procesos de globalización corporativa, deslegitimando este orden social y cuestionando la noción de historia lineal y evolutiva al volver al pasado indígena remoto para buscar ahí nuevas fuentes de sentido.
