| dc.description | This article is based on an empirical study on the role played by elite schools in the intergenerational reproduction of the Chilean elite. For that purpose, the elite is defined as the group that holds the central and most influential positions in society. We argue that elite schools are a social space for socialization, distinction and reproduction of the elite, and therefore, they allow institutionalization and legitimation of these groups in Chile. A qualitative methodology (in-depth interviews and document analysis) allow concluding that elite schools play a significant role at choosing who are allowed in elite groups and who are not, at socializing a new generation of the elite in the role they are expected to play in the future, and providing spaces for interaction and creation of ties. The high school attended is a mark and credential that follows the students through their future. | en-US |
| dc.description | Este artículo analiza el rol que los colegios de elite juegan en la reproducción intergeneracional de la elite chilena. Se definió la elite como un grupo que ocupa posiciones centrales y de mayor influencia y reconocimiento en la sociedad. Los colegios de elite son una fuente de socialización, distinción y reproducción de la elite, es decir, se constituyen en espacios de institucionalización y legitimación de aquella. A través de una metodología cualitativa (análisis de documentos y entrevistas en profundidad) se concluye que los colegios de elite cumplen un rol fundamental al seleccionar quiénes pueden acceder a ciertos círculos sociales, al mismo tiempo, transmiten a la nueva generación de la elite los roles que deberán cumplir y les abre oportunidades para se conozcan y se vinculen. Así, el colegio de procedencia constituye un sello y una credencial que acompaña al estudiante en el futuro y que lo distingue del resto de los estudiantes. | es-ES |
