A severe disease on sycamore (Platanus occidentalis L., P. orientalis L. y P. acerifolia [Ait.] Willd.) is described in the Center-South region of Chile, that causes death of buds, shoots, branches, inflorescences and leaves. On the basis of disease symptons of plants in the field, the morfological and biometrical characteristics of the reproductive structure formed in naturally infected tree organs and the observation of in vitro cultures, the causal agent of the disease was identified as Gloeosporium platani Oud., which teleomorph is Gnomonia platani Kleb. Finally the most important factors that favors the disease and the host susceptibility are briefly discussed.Se describe una grave enfermedad del plátano (Platanus occidentalis L., P. orientalis L. y P. acerifolia [Ait.] Willd.) presente en la región centro-sur de Chile, que causa muerte de yemas, brotes, ramas, inflorescencias y hojas. Las características de los síntomas de la enfermedad en plantas en campo y aquellas morfológicas y biométricas de las estructuras reproductivas del agente causal presente en dichos órganos afectados en forma natural y las observaciones efectuadas en los cultivos realizados in vitro, han permitido identificarlo como Gloeosporium platani Oud., cuyo teleomorfo es Gnomonia platani Kleb. Se discuten también, brevemente, las condiciones que favorecen los ataques y la susceptibilidad del huésped.
