In the Chronicle of Fredegarius (France, c.660), in the Mozarabic Chronicle of 754 (Spain), in the texts of the Exaltation of the Cross (c.690-780), and in several later sources from the medieval West, it is said that, during the war against the Sassanids, the emperor Heraclius (610-641) defeated a Persian warrior in a duel or single combat. This episode is part of a legendary tradition around the figure of Heraclius, which the Western imaginary linked intimately with the history of the Holy Cross. However, there are noteworthy parallels and similarities between the account of these Western texts and some Byzantine sources, such as the Brief History of Nicephorus. These suggest that this tradition is not limited to the Western sphere. Furthermore, they imply that the history of combat could be the legendary distortion of a historical event that actually happened and that, over time, was transformed into the collective memory. A possibility that no one has analyzed yet, and which will be explore in this paper by the contrast of different sources.Key words: Heraclius, Single combat, Byzantium, 7th century, Holy Cross.En la Crónica de Fredegario (Francia, c.660), en la Crónica Mozárabe del 754 (España), en los textos de la Exaltación de la Cruz (c.690-780) y en varias fuentes posteriores del Occidente medieval se relata que, en el contexto de la guerra contra los sasánidas, el emperador Heraclio (610-641) habría derrotado a un guerrero persa en un duelo o combate singular. Dicho episodio se inserta en el desarrollo de una tradición legendaria en torno a la figura de Heraclio, que el imaginario occidental llegó a asociar íntimamente con la historia de la Santa Cruz. Sin embargo, existen interesantes paralelos y semejanzas entre el relato de estos textos occidentales y algunos documentos bizantinos, como la Historia Breve de Nicéforo. Estas sugieren que la tradición no se limita al ámbito occidental. Además, implican que el tópico podría ser la distorsión legendaria de un hecho histórico que realmente aconteció y que, con el tiempo, se fue transformando en la memoria colectiva. Una posibilidad que nadie ha analizado hasta el momento, y que exploraremos en este artículo mediante el contraste dedistintas fuentes.Palabras clave: Heraclio, Combate singular, Bizancio, Siglo VII,Santa Cruz.
