| dc.description | In this study, based on a microsocial approach, the transitions that occurred in the valuations of the professional education during the nineteenth century in the Chilean oligarchy are analyzed. It is assumed that although the patrimonial alliances or the heritable patrimony continued to be an important part of the social reproduction strategies of the oligarchy it was insufficient in view of the increasing demand for specialization associated with the capitalist modernization. The work was carried out through the analysis of 65 letters of the correspondence that Tomás Eastman Quiroga had with his son Tomás Eastman Cox whereas he was educated in Manchester between 1886 and 1890.Key words: Oligarchy, nobiliary titles, professional education, social reproduction strategies, Valparaiso, Manchester. | en-US |
| dc.description | En este estudio, a partir de un enfoque microsocial, se analizan las transiciones que se produjeron en las valoraciones de la educación profesional durante el siglo XIX en la oligarquía chilena. Se postula que, si bien las alianzas matrimoniales o el patrimonio heredable siguió siendo parte importante de las estrategias de reproducción social de la oligarquía, fue insuficiente ante la creciente demanda de especialización asociada a la modernización capitalista.
