| dc.description | As an intermediate urban space between downtown and the suburbs, the establishment of Santiago’s outskirts is marked by the gradual transformation of its urban fabric based on different proposals aimed at addressing the issue of massive housing needs throughout the 20th century. Starting from the densification of the traditional square to its inner openness and the subsequent final breakdown of its structure, to the rationalization of the urban pattern by projecting large residential extensions, this article deals with the morphological transformation of the outskirts in Chile’s capital city. The proposed goal is to ultimately prove that, beyond architecture, its urban fabric is currently a spatial and social heritage, both based on the setup of its pattern and on the history and lifestyles of its inhabitants, resulting from the struggle to access urban housing. | en-US |
| dc.description | Como territorio urbano intermedio entre el centro y la periferia, la formación del pericentro de Santiago está marcada por las progresivas transformaciones que va experimentando su tejido urbano producto del desarrollo de las diversas propuestas que buscaron dar respuesta a la problemática del alojamiento masivo durante todo el siglo XX. Desde la densificación de la manzana tradicional -pasando por su apertura interior y posterior ruptura definitiva de su estructura-, hasta la racionalización de la trama urbana a través de la proyectación de grandes paños residenciales, el presente artículo da cuenta de la transformación morfológica del pericentro de la capital chilena. El objetivo propuesto es demostrar, en última instancia, que más allá de la arquitectura, su tejido urbano representa hoy un patrimonio espacial y social, tanto por la configuración de su trama como por la historia y los modos de habitar de quienes lo han poblado, resultado de la lucha que significó el acceso a la vivienda urbana. | es-ES |
