Osorno is the setting of a major patrimonial single-family housing quarter which combines expressions established in the second half of the nineteenth century -mostly the work of Central European settlers- and other expressions emerged as part of modernization processes that took place in the city and its surrounding areas, built from the third to the seventh decade of the twentieth century. This wealth of diverse architectures is a singular and hybrid constructed evidence that admits merger and dialogue, but also the expression of differences, in this case, the tradition-modernity tension. The paper seeks to reveal the continuity and change vectors that are part of such tension and observe its current expressions in these dwellings. This specific housing quarter, given its visibility and effectiveness, helps preserve the historic memory supporting the construction of local identity.Osorno es locación de un importante conjunto de vivienda unifamiliar patrimonial que conjuga expresiones erigidas en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, mayormente labor de colonos centroeuropeos, y otras expresiones surgidas como parte de los procesos de modernización ocurridos en la urbe y su territorio productivo, edificadas desde la tercera hasta la séptima décadas del siglo XX. Este acervo de arquitecturas diversas constituye un testimonio construido singular, híbrido, que admite fusión y diálogo, pero también la expresión de las diferencias, en este caso, la expresión de la tensión tradición-modernidad. El trabajo busca develar los vectores de continuidad y los de cambio que median dicha tensión y observar las formas de expresión presentes en estas viviendas a partir de la misma. Se plantea que este particular conjunto de viviendas, dada su visibilidad y vigencia, contribuye a preservar la memoria histórica, asistiendo a la construcción de identidad local.
