Genetics, as a science, experienced profound and rapid changes in the last decades of the 20th century, particularly in the area of genetic therapy, due to the contributions of the human genome proyect.Aim: To discuss and analyze the evolution of the human genome study as well as the origin and use of genetic therapy, highlighting the improvement and contribution of particular researchers and clinicians. Material and Method: A literature review was used to describe and analyze the development of the above mentioned aspects in a pief manner. Results: The human genome proyect began in 1990 and its first stage ended in June 2000. This defined the number of human genes as approximately 30,000. Among these only a small proportion is believed to be active and only 0,1% accounts for genotypic differences. Human beings have only 3 or 4 times the gene number of worms. Some outstanding personalities of the 20th century genetics are mentioned making comments on their opinions and contributions, discussing positive and negative aspects of genetic therapy. Conclusion: Genetic therapy has both positive and negative sides and these should be analyzed in the light of ethical principles and taking into consideration the evolution of genetics.El campo de la genética experimentó cambios profundos y rápidos en la últimas décadas del siglo XX, en especial en el área de la terapia génica y con el aporte del proyecto del genoma humano. Objetivo: Discutir y analizar la evolución del estudio del genoma humano y el origen y aplicación de la terapia génica, enfatizando la participación de algunos investigadores y clínicos destacados. Material y Método: Revisión bibliográfica enfatizando el desarrollo de los aspectos aludidos en forma simple y somera. Resultados: El proyecto del genoma humano, puesto en marcha en 1990 llevó a que en junio de 2000, se completara la primera fase del mismo. Ésta llevó a definir el número de genes humanos en alrededor de 30.000 y a saber que sólo un pequeño porcentaje de ellos "trabaja"; que nos diferenciamos genotípicamente por el 0,1% del DNA y que tenemos apenas 3 a 4 veces el número de genes de un gusano. Se menciona a personalidades destacadas de la genética del siglo XX, aludiendo a sus opiniones y aportes. Conclusión: La terapia génica presenta aspectos positivos y negativos y debe ser analizada dentro de una perspectiva ética, que se ve facilitada al conocer la evolución de este campo de la genética.
