dc.descriptionSince 1960 infant mortality (IM) in Chile has decreased owing to multiple factors. This paper aims to compare the IM rate and its causes between 1989 and 1998 in Chile. Using a time sequence study, IM data was obtained from the Demographic Annual Reports of the National Institute of Statistics. Results: a 40% reduction in the total number of deaths (5,183 vs less than 2,793 in 1989 and 1998 respectively). The main causes of death were perinatal pathology, malformations and respiratory diseases. Specific causes of death were pneumonia and immaturity. Conclusions: in Chile the so called "avoidable deaths" account for most of the IM during the 90s, hence it is important to continue making efforts to prevent them.en-US
dc.descriptionIntroducción: La mortalidad infantil (MI) en Chile ha experimentado un notable descenso a partir de 1960. Objetivo: comparar la MI y sus causas entre los años 1989 y 1998 en Chile. Método: Estudio de Serie de Tiempo que recoge información proveniente de los Anuarios Demográficos producidos por el Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas. Resultados: las muertes se redujeron en un 40% (5 183 vs 2 793 muertes en 1989 y 1998, respectivamente). Los tres grandes grupos de causas se mantuvieron constantes: enfermedades perinatales, malformaciones y enfermedades respiratorias, al igual que las principales causas específicas: bronconeumonía (13,1 vs 8,5%) y prematuridad (9,2 vs 13%). Conclusiones: en Chile en la década de los años 90, las denominadas "causas evitables" todavía producen una importante cantidad de defunciones, por lo que aún es pertinente poner énfasis en su prevención.es-ES
