During the last few years studies have revealed an increasing problem of overweight and obese children at all ages. We studied the nutritional status of children between 1 and 5 years old, followed-up from birth. This retrospective study of 1,088 children registered at an outpatient clinic in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago between 1996 and 2000. The data was collected from medical and nursing records. Results: 46.2% were boys, the average birth weight was 3 355 gm and a birth height of 49.8cm, with no differences between sexes. The percentage of underweight children was 2.7% at 1 year, decreasing to 0% at 5 years. Children at risk of being under weight were 11.6% at 1 year, decreasing to 7.5% at 5 years. Between 65% and 78% of underweight children were also short for their age. The percentage of overweight children increased from 12.7% at 1 year to 16.8% at 5 years, and obese children from 2.7% to 11% respectively. Although both under and overweight children were observed in children of all ages and both sexes, the percent of underweight boys was higher at all ages, reaching significance at 2 and 5 years. The percentage of overweight boys is highest at 1 year, reaching significance at 3 years. The percentage of children with short stature is 20.7% at 1 year decreasing to 16.9% at 5 years. Although the proportion of boys with short stature is higher than in girls, only at 1 year was this statistically significant. Conclusions: In the group studied there were children with nutritional problems both of under and overweight.En los últimos años los estudios nutricionales revelan una creciente tendencia al sobrepeso y obesidad a todas las edades. Objetivo: describir el estado nutricional en niños entre 1 y 5 años de edad, controlados desde el nacimiento. Pacientes y Métodos: se realiza un seguimiento retrospectivo de 1 088 niños inscritos entre 1996 y 2000 en un consultorio de la Región Metropolitana. La información se obtuvo desde la ficha clínica y los registros de enfermería. Resultados: 46,2% de los niños eran varones; en promedio pesaron al nacer 3 335 g y midieron 49,8 cm sin diferencias por sexo. Según estado nutricional, por año de edad, los desnutridos corresponden al 2,7% al año, disminuyen en las edades siguientes hasta 0% a los 5 años; los niños en riesgo de desnutrir son el 11,6% al año y disminuyen hasta 7,5% a los 5 años. Entre el 65% y 78% del grupo con déficit de peso presentaban déficit de talla. Los niños con sobrepeso aumentan de 12,7% al año a 22% entre los 3 y 4 años y a 16,8% a los 5 años, los niños obesos aumentan de 2,7% al año a 11% a los 5 años. Se observa déficit y exceso de peso en todas las edades y en ambos sexos. La proporción de varones con déficit de peso es mayor en todas las edades, sólo difieren significativamente a los 2 y 5 años. El sobrepeso es más alto en varones al año. Difieren significativamente a los 3 años. La proporción de niños con talla insuficiente es de 20,7% al año y de 16,9% a los 5 años. En todas las edades la proporción de varones con déficit de talla es mayor que las niñas, pero sólo difieren significativamente al año. Conclusión: en estos niños hay problemas nutricionales tanto por déficit como por exceso en todo el período estudiado, en ambos sexos.
