This study aims at characterizing the types of emotional care provided to the parturient by nursing staff. In orden to investigate this topic, an exploratory and descriptive qualitative research was developed. Data collection was accomplished in two steps: (1) observation of labor and childbirth; (2) semi-structured interviews after birth with 14 firtst-time mothers. The results were described through categories encompassing the interviews and the observation process, characterizing in three categories designated as: routine, care, interactive care and emotional support. The study also shows how the mothers perceive the support given by the nursing staff e how it has positively influenced labor and birth.El objetivo de este trabajo fue caracterizar los tipos de atención ofrecidos a la parturienta, pretendiendo detectar la calidad de apoyo emocional ofrecido por el equipo de enfermería. En este estudio cualitativo, de carácter exploratorio y descriptivo, la recolección de datos fue realizada en dos etapas: (1) observación del trabajo de parto y (2) entrevistas semi estructuradas realizadas en el pos parto con 14 primetizas de entre 17 y 34 años. Los resultados caracterizaron las interacciones entre la parturienta y el grupo de enfermería, y fueron presentados en tres categorías: atención de rutina, atención interactiva y apoyo emocional. La investigación demostró cómo las parturientas perciben el apoyo dado por el equipo y cómo esto tuvo influencia en el trabajo de parto.
