Social vulnerability, subjective severity and post-traumatic growth in groups affected by a climate disaster

| dc.description | This study aimed to compare characteristics-conditions of social vulnerability to post-traumatic growth and subjective severity of households exposed and affected by a climate disaster in Chile. Through a cross-correlational design, 324 households responded to instruments of subjective impact to the event, post-traumatic growth, sociodemographic characterization, and physical-material conditions associated with post-disaster reconstruction. As a result, the exposed-susceptible groups that presented significant subjective severity were the elderly, people with disabilities/chronic disease, female, with low income and without higher education, adding those who are in the condition of harm partial-total in their home and did not receive support for housing reconstruction. On the other hand, the group that presented the highest post-traumatic growth were the elderly, adding those who are in the situation of partial-total damage to the home and those who were satisfied with the post-disaster reconstruction. We conclude with the identification of differential susceptibilities-capacities among the vulnerable groups, which should promote evaluative, preventive and interventional measures appropriate to the psychosocial characteristics of each population, which must be accompanied by an integral institutional strengthening in disaster risk management. | en-US |
| dc.description | Este estudio tuvo como objetivo comparar características-condiciones de vulnerabilidad social ante el crecimiento postraumático y severidad subjetiva de hogares expuestos y afectados por un desastre climatológico en Chile. Por medio de un diseño transversal-correlacional, 324 hogares respondieron instrumentos de impacto subjetivo al evento, crecimiento postraumático, caracterización sociodemográfica y condiciones físico-materiales asociadas a la reconstrucción posdesastre. Como resultados, los grupos expuestos-susceptibles que presentaron una significativa severidad subjetiva fueron los adulto/as mayores, personas con discapacidad/enfermedad crónica, de sexo femenino, con bajos ingresos económicos y sin educación superior, sumándose quienes se encuentran en la condición de daño parcial-total en su vivienda y no recibieron apoyo para la reconstrucción habitacional. Por otro lado, el colectivo que presentó un mayor crecimiento postraumático fueron los adultos mayores, sumándose quienes se encuentran en la situación de daño parcial-total de la vivienda y los que se encontraban satisfechos con la reconstrucción posdesastre. Concluimos con la identificación de susceptibilidades-capacidades diferenciales entre los grupos vulnerados, lo cual debiese promover medidas evaluativas, preventivas e interventivas adecuadas a las características psicosociales de cada población, lo cual debe ser acompañado de un fortalecimiento institucional integral en la gestión del riesgo de desastre. | es-ES |
