Three main stages of the Bolivarian government can be identified. This article analyzes the last period, particularly the severe political and economic deterioration to which the Maduro government has led the country. An authoritarian turn has been configured, which has undermined democracy, and generated an economic collapse that was worsened as a consequence of the unilateral economic sanctions imposed by the Trump government. This has resulted in an unprecedented social/humanitarian crisis. The Venezuelan and international opposition have erred in their reading of the situation and in not recognizing the permanence of a minority but significant popular support and military unity as a core component of the Maduro government, leading them to take “regime change” actions that resulted in notorious failures. Venezuelan society is divided, the zero-sum political game is not sustainable. A negotiated solution to the Venezuelan crisis is seen as the only alternative to violence. The challenge of shaping a post-Maduro Venezuela remains, including the need to overcome oil dependency and building a post-rentier Venezuela.Se pueden identificar tres etapas principales del gobierno bolivariano. Este artículo analiza el último periodo, particularmente el severo deterioro político y económico al cual ha conducido al país el gobierno de Maduro. Se ha configurado un giro autoritario, que ha socavado la democracia, y generado un colapso económico que se ha acentuado como consecuencia de las sanciones económicas unilaterales impuestas por el gobierno de Trump. Esto ha tenido como consecuencia una crisis social/humanitaria sin precedentes en Venezuela. La oposición venezolana e internacional han errado en su lectura de la situación y al no reconocer la permanencia de un minoritario pero significativo apoyo popular y la unidad militar como componente medular del gobierno de Maduro, llevándoles a tomar acciones de “cambio de régimen” que resultaron en notorios fracasos. La sociedad venezolana está fraccionada, el juego político de suma cero no es sostenible. Se visualiza como única alternativa a la violencia una salida negociada a la crisis venezolana. Se mantiene el desafío de dar forma a la Venezuela post-Maduro, incluyendo el reto de superar la dependencia del petróleo y la construcción de una Venezuela post-rentista.
