The effect of the inter-annual variability of rainfall on the development of Pinus radiata (D. Don) plantations in the sandy soil zones of VIII region of Chile

| dc.description | The effects of the inter-annual variability of rainfall and different treatments on the water balance and the development of Pinus radiata (D. Don) plantations in sandy soils in the VIII region of Chile were analyzed. It was necessary to determine the quantity of rainfall that fell on the ground, the temporal variation of the edaphic water content, the net evapotranspiration and the development of the forests during two consecutive years that had a similar quantity of rainfall, but with a different temporal distribution. The study was carried out in two plantations of 12-year-old Pinus radiata with a planting density of 1,200 and 550 trees/ha, respectively. To determine the periodic variation of the increase in the basal area per hectare and the average per tree, the diameter of 25 trees was measured monthly. An inverse relationship between the planting density and the average diameter increase of the trees was noticed. This was principally because, in the sandy zones and especially during times of little rain, more rain reached the ground in the less dense plantation where canopy interception was less. The net evapotranspiration in both stands is practically the same and so one can deduce that the less dense plantation has a greater availability of water per tree, which affected the growth significantly. An important consideration that influenced the growth of both plantations during the two years was the soil water availability at the beginning of the period of greater growth. | dc.description | Se analizó el efecto que tiene la variabilidad interanual de la distribución temporal de las precipitaciones sobre el balance hídrico y el desarrollo de una plantación de Pinus radiata (D. Don) sometida a distintos manejos en la zona de los arenales de la VIII Región de Chile. Para ello se determinó la cantidad de precipitaciones que llegó al suelo, la variación temporal del contenido de agua del suelo, la evapotranspiración neta y el desarrollo de los rodales durante dos años consecutivos que tuvieron una cantidad similar de precipitaciones, pero con una distribución temporal distinta. El estudio se realizó en una plantación de Pinus radiata de 12 años, en la cual se delimitaron dos parcelas con densidad de 1.200 y 550 árboles/ha, respectivamente. Para determinar la variación periódica del incremento del área basal por hectárea y el promedio por árbol, mensualmente se midió el diámetro de 25 árboles por tratamiento. Se registró una relación inversa entre la densidad y el incremento diamétrico promedio de los árboles. Ello se debió principalmente a que en la zona de los arenales, especialmente durante el período de escasas precipitaciones, a la plantación menos densa llegó una mayor cantidad de agua al suelo. Ello es consecuencia de la menor pérdida de agua por intercepción del dosel. Como la evapotranspiración neta de ambos tratamientos fue semejante, se puede inferir que en la plantación menos densa hubo una mayor cantidad de agua disponible por árbol, lo que incidió significativamente en su desarrollo. Una condición importante que influenció el crecimiento de ambas plantaciones durante los dos años fue la disponibilidad de agua en el suelo al inicio del período de mayor crecimiento. Esta situación tuvo especial importancia si se considera que durante el estío los aportes por precipitaciones en esta zona fueron escasos. | es-ES |
