| dc.description | In Patagonia Douglas-fir is grown to produce high quality timber; thus plantations should be pruned. To prune a stand, the proportion of green crown to be removed (pruning severity) and the number of lifts should be defined. The objectives of this research were to quantify the effect of pruning severity on tree growth and to select indicator variables to determine when to carry out pruning lifts. To achieve the first objective a trial was established on low, medium and highly productive sites. Pruning severities applied were heavy (65 % of the total tree height), intermediate (50 %), light (25 %) and control trees (no pruning). To accomplish the second objective the association between five easy to measure variables (diameter at breast height (DBH), total height, diameter over stubs height, pruning height, maximum diameter over stubs of previous pruning) and maximum diameter over stubs (DOS) was studied on 656 trees. Removing more than 25 % of the green crown progressively diminished subsequent tree growth. On highly productive sites, medium to high pruning severity did not reduce diameter growth as much as it did on low quality site, when carrying out second and third lifts. | dc.description | Las plantaciones de Pseudotsuga menziesii (pino oregón) en la Patagonia tienen por objetivo la producción de madera de calidad libre de nudos. Para realizar la poda, se debe definir la severidad y el número de realces de poda a realizar. El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivos: a) cuantificar el efecto de diferentes severidades de poda sobre el crecimiento de los árboles y b) determinar qué variables medir para definir la oportunidad de realizar los distintos realces de poda. Para el primer objetivo se instalaron tres ensayos de severidad de poda, cada uno en un sitio de diferente productividad. Las severidades de poda aplicadas fueron: fuerte (65 % de la altura total del árbol), intermedia (50 %), suave (25 %) y se dejaron árboles testigo (sin poda). Para el segundo objetivo se determinó el grado de asociación entre cinco variables de fácil medición (diámetro a la altura del pecho (DAP), altura total, altura del diámetro máximo sobre muñón, altura de poda, diámetro máximo sobre muñón de la poda anterior) y el diámetro máximo sobre muñón (DMSM) en 656 individuos. Aumentar la severidad de poda por encima del 25 % de la altura del árbol disminuyó progresivamente el crecimiento. En el sitio más productivo, las podas medias a fuertes posteriores al primer realce produjeron menor disminución del crecimiento en diámetro que en los otros sitios. Para el primer realce, el DAP fue la variable más correlacionada al DMSM, mientras que, para los realces posteriores, estas variables fueron el DAP y la altura del realce anterior. | es-ES |
