In tre Andes mountains within the province of Valdivia, where the mayority of the native forest species of Southern Chile occur, a study was conducted concerning structur and potential of the forest. Stratifaying the species into two groups according to tolerance and occurrence at different altitudes, forest types are established which are also appropriate for photointerpretation. Employing sufficiently large sample plots (1/10 há.) in virgin forests, it is possible to differentiate phases in the type by mean diameter. These phases represent very homogenes substrate which can be utilized to improve presicion of forest inventories. Diameter distributions of these phases are represented by hiperbolic equations and they can be dynamic stages of development of virgin forests. Finaly, a growth analysis of the types based on meassurements of diameter increment and stem analysis shows a quite distinct potencial in the phases with values which frecuently surpace 10 m3/há. year.En la Cordillera de los Andes de la Provincia de Valdivia, donde concurren la mayoría de las especies del bosque nativo del sur de Chile, se realiza un estudio sobre su estructura y potencialidad. Estratificando las especies en dos grupos según su tolerancia y en base a la concurrencia de los distintos niveles altitudinales, se establecen tipos, que también son apropiados para la fotointerpretación. Empleando parcelas de muestreo suficientemente grandes (1/10 há) en bosques aún intocados, se logra diferenciar por el diámetro medio, fases dentro de los tipos, que representan subestratos muy homogéneos y que podrían utilizarse para mejorar la precisión en los inventarios forestales. Estas fases se representan por la distribución de los diámetros mediante ecuaciones hiperbólicas transformadas a rectas y pueden ser estados dinámicos del desarrollo del bosque virgen. Finalmente un análisis del crecimiento de los tipos, basado en mediciones del incremento diamétrico y algunos análisis fustales, muestra una potencialidad de las fases muy diferente, con valores que frecuentemente sobrepasan los 10 m3/há. año.
