| dc.description | The degree of knowledge and conservation status of Chilean temperate forest is evaluated considering three attributes of biodiversity (Noss, 1990): composition (list of elements), structure (spatial pattern) and function (ecological and evolutionary processes), and four levels of biological organization: genetic, population-species, community-ecosystem and landscape. The utility of the Chilean National System of Protected Areas (SNASPE) and of the forestry law, presently under discussion in the Chilean Congress, is also discussed. Three critical aspects are perceived in relation to SNASPE: (1) the size of most reserve is too small to sustain viable populations of the largest vertebrates; (2) most of the protected forests are located outside the region of highest endemism and species richness; (3) land adjacent to the protected areas is not subjected to any form of land-use control or regulation. On the other hand, in the prospective forestry law, forests are defined solely on the basis of tree species composition and cover. It is proposed that, in order to be an effective tool to sustainable management and conservation of native forests, this definition needs to integrate the different atributes of biodiversity and levels of organizations. The final discussion is about how ecology can contribute to promote a cultural change that may lead to a new relationship between human society and nature. | en-US |
| dc.description | La biodiversidad de los bosques nativos de Chile se caracteriza definiendo tres atributos: composición (lista de elementos), estructura (patrón espacial) y función (procesos ecológicos y evolutivos), y cuatro niveles de organización: genético, población-especie, comunidad-ecosistema y paisaje regional. Considerando estos atributos y niveles de organización, se revisa el estado de conservación y conocimiento actual acerca de los bosques nativos. Se analiza en particular la utilidad del Sistema Nacional de Areas Silvestres Protegidas del Estado (SNASPE) y del proyecto de ley sobre recuperación del bosque nativo actualmente en discusión en la Cámara del Senado de Chile.Respecto al SNASPE, se detectan tres aspectos críticos: (1) el tamaño de las reservas es insuficiente para mantener poblaciones viables de especies de grandes vertebrados; (2) la mayor parte de las áreas de protección del bosque se ubican fuera de las regiones de mayor diversidad y endemismo, y (3) las zonas adyacentes a las áreas de protección no están sujetas a ningún tipo de control y regulación del uso de la tierra. Respecto al actual proyecto de ley del bosque nativo, se constata que esta ley define los bosques basándose exclusivamente en la composición y cobertura de las especies arbóreas. Para posibilitar el manejo sustentable y la conservación del bosque nativo se propone que la ley debería incorporar a la definición los diferentes atributos y niveles de organización. Finalmente, se discute cómo la ecología puede contribuir a un cambio cultural que conduzca a una nueva relación de la sociedad humana con la naturaleza. | es-ES |
