| dc.description | The natural geographical range for lenga, or Nothofagus pumilio (Poepp. et Endl.) Krasser, extends in South America from 36°50' to 56° south latitude. North of 43° S, lenga occurs discontinuously and always at treeline, while to the south, lenga is more continuous. Among other factors that determine the geographical range of lenga, water availability is the most important overall factor, although temperature is the most important factor determining its altitudinal range. The climatic influence of precipitation and evaporation, together with the soil's waterholding capacity, are fundamental to ensure the supply of water that lenga needs. However, lenga does not grow in poorlydrained soils and its growth is limited by low fertility. The most propitious area for lenga is in the neighborhood of Coyhaique, Chile, were climate and soils arc the most favorable. Precise determination of site requirements for lenga will only be achieved by compiling sufficient data on physiographical position and soil characteristics for each stand in future studies and inventories. | en-US |
| dc.description | La lenga (Nothofagus pumilio) (Poepp. et Endl.) Krasser, se extiende geográficamente entre los 36°50'-56° S. Al norte de los 43° S su presencia es discontinua e inmediata al límite arbóreo; al sur en cambio observa una mayor continuidad geográfica. Entre los factores de sitio que definen su extensión está la temperatura, de mayor importancia en su distribución altitudinal; pero aún más decisivo es el balance hídrico del sitio. El clima, a través de las precipitaciones y la evapotranspiración, y el suelo a través de su capacidad de agua aprovechable son fundamentales para asegurar el abastecimiento de agua que la especie necesita. Sin embargo, la especie no se desarrolla en suelos de mal drenaje y presenta pobre desarrollo en suelos de baja fertilidad. La región en que lenga logra su mejor desarrollo es en los alrededores de Coyhaique, donde clima y suelo le son favorables. La precisión de los requerimientos de sitio de lenga, sin embargo, sólo se logrará si se recopilan suficientes datos sobre posición fisiográfica y suelo de cada rodal en los estudios e inventarios futuros. | es-ES |
