Based on the epistemological guidelines developed by Jacques Maritain, we intend to clarify the status of paleontology and other like disciplines. From these foundations, we argue that this kind of inquiry, due to its past and contingent object and its interpretative methodology, constitutes a specific epistemological type, different from that of science, here classified as historico-natural.En este artículo se aporta una clarificación del estatuto que les compete a la paleontología y a otras disciplinas. Tomando como fundamento la epistemologíadesarrollada por Jacques Maritain, sostenemos que esta clase de indagaciones, por su objeto pretérito y contingente, y por su metodología interpretativa, constituyen un tipo epistemológico específico, diferente del de la ciencia, que aquí catalogamos como histórico-natural.
